Cleaning Tips To Consider If Your Cat Pees On The Carpet

As much as you love your furry companion, it can be frustrating if your cat is urinating on the carpet. This type of accident can occur in even the best human and feline relationship. However, the bigger question is, ‘what should be done after the accident occurs?’ Unlike water, this is a stain that cannot be ignored for the simple fact that it will only cause your carpet to become smellier the longer the urine stays in the carpet. Even if you become ‘nose blind’ to the smell, visitors to your home will not be. This brief guide will give you tips on how to treat these stains.

Quick Action Is Important

The quicker that you are able to treat the urine stain, the more effective the cleaning process will be. On the other hand, a long sitting stain is much more difficult to remove, and is likely to become a permanent part of the carpet. This applies to all stains, even cat urine stains.

Change Paper Towels Regularly

If you have been using a paper towel to remove the urine, and the paper towel becomes soaked, you need to replace it when a clean and dry towel.

Do not put the dirty paper towel in the kitchen trash or else the smell will permeate the trash can. Dispose of the used paper towel in the outside trash can.

Even though, with this approach, you may end using an entire roll or two of paper towels, it is the ideal alternative to using a urine soaked paper towel the entire time.

Use A Natural Homemade Cleaner

Take one cup of lukewarm water and vinegar with 1/3 to 1/4 teaspoon of dish washing detergent. Liquid detergent works best. Place this cleaner into a bottle and apply it to the stain. Be sure not to over soak the stain because that may cause it to spread.

Rinse And Repeat

Using a paper towel, gently blot the solution into the carpet where the accident occurred. You can also use a wet vac to remove the moisture from the carpet.

Rinse the treated area, and repeat the process again if necessary.

Do Not Use Heat

While cleaning the carpet with this solution, you may be tempted to either add hot water to the solution or use hot water to rinse the carpet.

You should never use hot water to clean a cat urine stain or use heat to dry the stain. Heat will allow the stain to set in the carpet. It will also cause the odor to become even stronger and pungent.

It is important to keep in mind that these tips work the best with a fresh stain. If you are dealing with an older urine stain, you will need to take a different approach.

Hire A Professional Carpet Cleaning Company

If you are able to smell cat urine, but the carpet appears to be clean, most likely this means that cat urine was able to soak completely through the carpet. It may have even stained the flooring that is underneath padding.

You can use a black light and see if you can find out where the stains are in the carpet. Unfortunately, the above mentioned cleaning advice is unlikely to make the stain and odor go away.

For a deep set stain, the only option you have at this point is hiring a professional carpet cleaning company. This option is certainly less expensive than installing new carpet.

A carpet cleaning technician is a skilled and knowledgeable professional who knows the best way to treat and remove this type of stain from your carpet.

How To Prevent Future Accidents

Most of the time when a cat has an accident on the carpet, it is an accident. But, there are some steps that cat owners can take to avoid future accidents.

The one thing to keep in mind is that cats have a sense of smell that is much stronger than humans. So, if you have more than one cat using a single litter box, that may be the reason why the accidents are happening.

For each cat, you should have a litter box, and then there should be an extra one. This means that if you have three cats, there should be four litter boxes in the home.

It is also important that the litter boxes are large enough. As cats get bigger, they outgrow litter boxes. For adult cats, use the largest litter boxes available.

Litter boxes should also be cleaned at least twice a day and thoroughly cleaned with warm water and unscented soap each week. After the litter box dries, apply new litter.

It is important to note that if the cat can still smell the urine from the previous accident, it will likely use the same area of the carpet. So, if you want to be sure that all of the odors have been removed from the carpet, hire a professional carpet cleaning team.

Cat urine is pungent and can destroy your carpet if proper action is not taken immediately. Fortunately, by following these tips, you can live in your home and it will not smell like a litter box.

8 Carpet Cleaning Tips for Cleaner, Healthier Carpets!

In order to keep your carpets clean and allow them to last longer, you need some expert tips from the specialists in the industry.

1. Make Haste

Clean any spills, wet or dry as quickly as possible. Vacuum or sweep up dry spills or messes immediately to prevent them from being trampled into the pile. Dab or blot wet spills (never rub) to remove any excess moisture promptly to prevent the liquid from spreading. Use a paper towel or a white absorbent cloth/towel. Use a vacuum to suck up any additional moisture. If the spill is still visible, call in the experts to clean the area. Using the incorrect cleaning detergent or technique can cause the stain to set and become permanent.

2. Protect

Use carpet protectors to prevent spills and dirt from getting into your carpet in the first place. Protectors are ideally placed at entrances and in other high traffic areas. Carpet runners, rugs and mats make ideal carpet protectors. The bonus is that these will also help protect the pile and prevent it from becoming compacted. However, take care to move the protectors around to prevent a visible difference between the protected area and surrounding carpet from occurring.

3. No Shoes

Make it a policy to remove shoes before entering a room with a carpeted area. The amount of dirt and microorganisms that are tracked in on the bottom of shoes is largely responsible for wear and tear as well as dirty carpets. Simply wiping your shoes on a mat before entering is not an effective solution. Wear socks or house slippers when walking on the carpets. Remember that the skin on the soles of your feet exude oils that will not only add to dirtying the carpets but will also attract dirt.

4. Suck It Up

Vacuum regularly – at least once a week is recommended for most types of carpets. It is a common misconception that vacuuming damages your carpets so more than once a week is even better. Remember to pay attention to those hidden areas under or behind furniture items. Use an attachment to vacuum along the edges of the carpet where it meets the skirting board. Take a little extra time to vacuum high traffic areas or vacuum these areas more frequently. The more often you vacuum, the less likely it will be that dirt will have the chance to collect and become compacted into the carpet fibres.

5. Household Pets

Pets are a huge factor when it comes to keeping carpets clean. Not only do they track dirt in from the outdoors but shed hair, eat on the floor and may even use your carpet as a toilet. Pets also have odours that can draw into the carpet fibres for an unpleasant smell. So keep your pets off the carpets as much as possible and get them a bed, blanket or even a rug of their own where they can lay down comfortably without affecting the carpets.

6. Pet Messes

Removing urine (or feces) from pets can be particularly problematic. Not only do you have the stain to contend with but the unwanted odour that can hang around for weeks or days. Getting rid of the smell is also important to prevent your pet from returning to the same area and performing the same unwanted behavior over and over again. Clean pet stains using cold water. Pour the water on the stain and then dab with a dry, white cloth or towel to remove excess moisture. Continue the process until the stain and odour disappear entirely. If this fails, contact the pros who know exactly how to treat and eliminate pet odours and stains.

7. Watch The Weather

Keep an eye on your local weather report and if it looks like rain, snow or other wet weather, take some extra measures to protect your carpets from mud and other unwanted dirt being tracked in. Place an old towel or sheet at the entrances to your home to reduce the amount of dirt that is carried onto the carpets. Ask visitors and residents in your home to remove their wet shoes and coats at the door.

8. The Carpet Cleaning Pros

Your carpets need a professional clean on a regular basis. It is recommended to call in the expert carpet cleaners like Flawless Carpet Cleaning at least once a year and more often for busy households where carpets are likely to get dirty faster. Remember to do a little research into the different service providers in your area and compare costs and cleaning techniques as well as skill and expertise. Make sure that they are using quality carpet cleaning chemicals and that they won’t cut any corners. You should also choose experts that use suitable chemicals and techniques for your type of carpet. Incorrect cleaning can lead to warping, shrinkage or other damage to your carpets.

How to Keep Clean Carpets Year Round

Many homeowners assume that their carpets are clean just because there is no debris on the floor.  But deep down between the fibers it is a completely different story.  Just a visual inspection of your carpet isn’t enough they still need regular care and maintenance if you want them to stay clean and keep your home healthy.  Dirt and debris in your carpet is inevitable regardless of how tidy you are.  You have constant foot traffic that grinds dust and debris down into the fibers making your carpets dirty even though they look impeccable.  Let’s look at how you can keep your carpets cleaned year round.

Regular Vacuuming is Key

One of the best ways to keep your carpets cleaned and well maintained is to vacuum them on a regular basis.  Vacuuming two or even three times a week will prevent dirt from building up in the fibers and keep dust and other allergens out of your home.

Deal with Spills and Stains Right Away

Spills are inevitable no matter how careful you are.  If you have kids and a family then chances are that juice, coffee or some other liquid will end up on your carpets before too long.  Treating the stains right away will keep the carpets from getting stained.  When something lands on your carpet then you want to blot the liquid and not scrub vigorously.  Blotting will lift the liquids from the carpet whereas scrubbing will just spread the stain and make it worse.  Here is how you can treat spills and messes that happen to your carpet.

Don’t Use Harsh Chemical Products

There are dozens of different types of products on the market to clean carpets or remove stains, in fact there is a whole aisle at the supermarket for them.  Not all of these products are created equal and some of them are too harsh for your carpets.  You need to select a product that works with the type of carpet you have.  If you have an expensive silk area rug then you need a product that is mild enough, the same goes for cotton or wool rugs as well.  The wrong product can damage your very expensive carpets.

If you want to have a clean home then it needs to start with having clean carpets.  Having a professional carpet cleaner come in once or twice a year isn’t enough, you will have to maintain them throughout the year.  Regular maintenance will help your carpets last longer and look brilliant over the years.

Why Professional Carpet Cleaning is a Good Idea

Carpets experience direct foot traffic all day every day. General foot wear and tear together with dirt accumulation are the common problems faced by many homeowners. To keep the carpet looking new and increase its duration, you should keep the carpet clean and well maintained. Carpets need to be professionally cleaned twice or at least once in a year. Here are some pros and cons of professional cleaning that will answer why professional carpet cleaning is a good idea.

Advantages of Professional Carpet Cleaning

  1. Extended Carpet Life

When dust, dirt, and other debris accumulate in a carpet and get embedded within the carpet fibers, the fibers start deteriorating and splitting. Removing the accumulated dirt improves the longevity of the carpet. A professional carpet cleaning removes dirt and debris from deep within the fibers and leaves the carpet sanitized. Vacuuming regularly can help reduce dirt accumulation in between professional cleaning.

  1. Elimination of Carpet Stains

Professional carpet cleaning help removes tough stains. The hot water extraction easily removes stains from coffee spills, pet stains, ink, red wine, dirt, and mud. With professional carpet cleaning, you don’t have to worry about embarrassing ugly spots. It’s important to ensure that stains are dealt with properly ASAP once they occur. The best option is to contact a professional carpet cleaning company who can provide a professional yet affordable carpet cleaning service to remove any stains that accidentally happen.

  1. Healthy Environment

Allergens and dirt accumulated in the carpet fibers can get their way into the air causing allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and other health problems. The higher temperature of the hot water used in professional carpet cleaning kills all the allergens accumulated in the carpet. Professional carpet cleaning leaves your carpet fully sanitized.

  1. Complete Removal of Dirt

It is easier to vacuum your carpet than hiring a carpet cleaning service, unfortunately vacuuming only removes surface dirt. The dirt and debris embedded with the fibers are still there after vacuuming. When bacteria, dirt, dust and other debris continue accumulating the carpet can start producing an odor smell. A professional carpet cleaning leaves no dirt in between the fibers.

  1. Maintaining Appearance

It is recommended to clean your carpet after every six to twelve months. When soil deposits last too long in your carpet it makes your carpet starts looking dirty and outdated. Professional carpet cleaning makes your carpet looking new and increases the aesthetic value of your room.

Cons of Professional Carpet Cleaning

  1. Cost

An average professional carpet cleaning ranges between $200 to $300.  However that is still far cheaper than replacing your carpets.

Final Note

The best way to maintain and keep your carpet healthier, better looking and last longer is to have your carpet professionally cleaned once or twice in a year.
